CHRIS HOY won three gold medals at the Olympics and was rightly chosen by the voting public as the BBC Sports Personality of the Year. There were other good contenders, notably Lewis Hamilton and Rebecca Adlington, but no other British competitor has won three golds at a single Olympic Games since 1908, when competition may fairly be considered to have been less intense.
So he is truly the Sports Personality of the Year and his achievement in Beijing was extraordinary. Moreover, since returning from the Games, he has worn his honours with charm and modesty, a credit to his sport and to Scotland.
